Reality television is a sort of TV programming that presents supposedly unscripted dramatic or humorous circumstances, documents of actual events, and most often uses ordinary people instead of profession al actors. Although this sort of TV program has been there in way or the other since the early years of television, then as game shows, but the term reality television is normally used to describe programs of this sort, which were produced since the year 2000. Documentaries and other non fictional TV programs like news and sports shows are usually not grouped as reality shows.

Reality television covers a whole variety of programming system. Reality television regularly depicts a customized and highly influenced form of reality, which utilizes sensationalism to draw audience so as to generate advertising profit. Those involved are often placed in interesting places or abnormal circumstances and are sometimes trained to act in certain scripted ways by off-screen story editors or segment producer with the depiction of events and speech stage-managed and manufactured to create a false impression of reality through editing and other post production skills.

The antecedents to television reality were traceable to 1940s, which portrayed people in unscripted situations. Its progression continued until by the year 2000 when this sort of TV program witnessed a sudden increase of global popularity. At present, there are at least two television channels that are devoted to reality television. These are in the U.S and U.K respectively.

Reality television is also known to be in different styles and systems as it is seen today. The most common ones are documentary style, elimination shows, renovation, self-improvement or makeover, social experiment, dating shows, talk shows, hidden cameras, supernatural, hoaxes and so on. Some of these have also sub categories.
